Dell Gains More Than 50 Multi-Million Dollar Wins in U.S. Education Market Within Last 12 Months
More Education Customers Selected Dell Than Any Other Personal Computing Vendor in 2000
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2001-- Dell (Nasdaq:DELL - news), the No. 1 provider of personal computing systems to the U.S. education market(a), announced today that it has gained more than 50 multi-million dollar wins in the K12 and higher education markets within the last 12 months.

The announcement comes on the heels of the latest market data from IDC, listing Dell as the leading supplier of personal computing systems to the U.S. education market for the year 2000, gaining more than five points of market share during calendar year 20001. This is the first time that the company has been the No. 1 provider to education for the entire year.

``Technology is becoming a critical component to the world of education,'' said Bill Rodrigues, Dell's vice president and general manager for education and healthcare. ``It is no longer a tool that sits in a lab to be used periodically. Through wireless networks and mobile computing, technology has become a powerful tool to increase teacher productivity and improve student performance. As the U.S. leader in providing technology to the education market, we take our role very seriously. Our teams are dedicated to making it as easy as possible for educators and administrators to take full advantage of technology in education. That's our job, and that's what we're focused on throughout the year.''

In its fiscal year 2001, Dell worked with a wide range of education customers to provide innovative solutions. For example:

-- The Center for Academic Computing at The Penn State University

installed a server cluster comprised of 42 Dell PowerEdge(tm) 1550

servers. Named ``Lion-XE,'' the cluster enables researchers at Penn

State to study a variety of complex subjects, including

computational chemistry, fluid mechanics and biology, theoretical

ecology and gravitational physics. This type of research was

previously reserved for multimillion-dollar supercomputers or

mainframes, but can now be handled with industry standard servers

at a significantly lower price.

-- Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) in Texas

worked with Dell to standardize the entire district on Dell

systems, including 2,250 Dell OptiPlex(tm) desktops and 17

PowerEdge servers, displacing the district's old Apple systems.

Mission CISD worked with Dell Financial Services L.P. to develop a

customized three-year leasing agreement that allowed the district

to deploy all the units in a few weeks from the purchase order

date. Additionally, Dell will provide Mission CISD with a Dell

Mobile Computer Lab containing 15 TrueMobile(tm) wireless-enabled

Dell Latitude(tm) notebooks for instant Internet access.

-- In September 2000, University of Washington (UW), Bothell, moved

to a new campus and standardized 90% of the campus on Dell

hardware. UW Bothell, selected Dell for its price for performance

products and award-winning customer service. Currently servicing

1,000 students and 150 faculty and staff, UW Bothell, supports its

students and staff with 12 PowerEdge servers, Dell

PowerVault(tm)storage, 750 OptiPlex desktops and 75 Dell

Inspiron(tm) and Latitude notebooks. As the university constructs

new buildings on campus, they continue to select Dell's product

and services, including more than 300 Dell

Precision(tm) workstations and additional PowerEdge servers and

PowerVault storage products that will populate two new buildings

opening in the summer of 2001.

Dell has served the education market for nearly 10 years with dedicated teams for K12 and higher education. Education customers are turning to Dell for a variety of reasons, including the company's quality products, award-winning service and support, and dedicated education organization of sales, service, and customer support teams.
