<<why a large population of Americans are so driven to sue each other>>

Ordinary Americans don't sue each other all that often. It's expensive and no fun at all. The exception is that divorce in many states is still a full-scale civil action. I was involved in a contested divorce in NY State, and the experience is truly awful.

The rational explanation for almost all other American suing activity is that there can be lots of money in it, far more than in Europe. For both the winner and the winner's lawyers. So that's a reason why there are so many lawyers here.

So, people like to sue deep-pocketed entities, such as businesses, rich people, and ordinary people's liability insurance companies. Preferably using contingency-fee lawyers, in which case the plaintiff risks almost nothing even if they lose.
