Ron, I don't know what you basis is for saying going to Vietnam was not the right thing to do.

One can judge solely on the result and then one can ask if American had not shown or done what it did would communism have got a larger critical mass and even now not have collapsed as it did.

Many good people of liberal and conservative bent went to Vietnam and many gave everything. Was there a smarter and better thing to do. Most likely yes. But the rational for this sacrifice was to save freedom for a people who were to be enslaved. The rational was real. The execution of saving freedom was a failure. Those who went as patriots serving their country demonstrated a nobility of the goodness and greatness of being an American.

Now that I know of the stupidity of those in charge of the War I'm frustrated and saddened. So much waste so much stupidity. But that does not detract from the valor and honor of those who went and I don't know what other course of action could have occurred.

So I don't know what you mean by right. I know many did with honesty and courage and nobility do what they believed to be right. Some going to the war and some protesting the war. Many others did what the did in cowardice. Some using the war and others avoiding or protesting the war.

As to was going to Vietnam as the right thing to do I have very mixed feelings. But I believe that many even most did their best to do what they believed to be right at the time.
But looking back I don't see how it might have been different other than having those at the top understand how to set a goal and putting in place American Know How to get to the goal. Many lost lives in failure as a result of not having goals.
