Nixon was a liberal not a conservative. My God he believed that everyone should be given a guaranteed salary whether or not they worked. He believed as you noted in price controls and government intervention in everything we did. I despised the man and never thought I would despise anyone as much until Bill Clinton came into power. They were both corrupt and unprincipled.

You chose the discount rate. Not the best indicator. This is an artificial rate. for many years Banks were even reluctant to borrow at the discount window since it was seen as a sign of weakness. The discount rate is just that a lower than market rate to permit even banks that are not making it with normal funding sources, (deposits), to have access to liquidity.

Take a look at the 30 year Treasury bond rates or the Fed Fund rates, for the same time frame.
