Critical Path and Entrust Provide Secured Directory Infrastructure for Canadian Government's Secure Channel Project
November 01, 2001 04:03:00 AM ET

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 2001--

Canada's Secure Channel Project Leverages CP(TM)Directory Server To Bring New Secured eGovernment Services To Millions Of Citizens And Businesses Throughout Canada

Critical Path, Inc. CPTH, a global leader in communication technology and integrated messaging solutions, today announced that Entrust, Inc. ENTU will leverage the combination of Entrust's enhanced Internet security capabilities and the CP(TM) Directory Server from Critical Path to build a secured communications infrastructure for the Canadian government's "Secure Channel" project. Secure Channel will transform the way Canadians access and use government services by providing secured, online access to key government services and information.

The Canadian Government's Secure Channel project will enable citizens to more securely conduct online activities such as filing tax returns, renewing passports and checking employment records. The CP Directory Server works with Entrust's enhanced Internet security solutions to simplify and streamline the management of millions of user profiles, allowing Secure Channel the ability to identify and verify users, control access to the information that users are authorized to view and protect individual personal privacy.

"As governments and other trusted third parties look to move transactions online, constituent trust will increasingly be tied to the ability to provide a secured environment," said Dan Blum, senior vice president and research director at The Burton Group. "We will see an increasing number of governments follow Canada's lead of building secured online services for citizens, and directory services such as Critical Path's will play a crucial role in the success of these initiatives."

The CP Directory Server provides an ideal foundation for a secured Internet/Extranet initiative. A primary challenge of moving transactions online is managing new, increasingly complex relationships between users and services. In order to conduct transactions more securely and effectively, users must be identified based on their individual profiles. The CP Directory Server, which stores authoritative user information for authentication and authorization, enables role-based policy computing services and provides secure access to a consistent view of user identity information, authentication attributes, personal preferences, contact information and role association.

"As governments move higher value transactions online, the combination of Entrust's industry-leading enhanced Internet security capabilities and Critical Path's directory infrastructure will help to create the secured and trusted environment required," said Charlene Acres, director, partner solutions, Entrust. "As a Critical Path Technology Partner, we have leveraged the CP Directory Server in more than 250 of our installations. Critical Path's industry leadership, its strong technology, and its proven ability to deploy large-scale directory projects provide us with the infrastructure we need to provide secured, next-generation online services."

"The Canadian Government is another example of a leading global organization that is leveraging the Critical Path and Entrust Technology relationship for secured, reliable and high-performance Internet communication and commerce," said Sue Barsamian, senior vice president of marketing, Critical Path. "As organizations continue to reach out over the Internet to bring new secure services to a wider audience of users, a scalable directory infrastructure plays an increasingly important role in achieving this goal."
