OT Cows are ruminants. They eat grass. If you don't have grass you can import feed stock. The Europeans started treating their cows as if they were carnivorous. Feeding their cows with the ground up carcasses of dead animals and this caused the mad cow disease.

They could import the meat from Australia, Brazil Canada US or Argentina. But they prefer to raise their own herds even though is not economic.

Sugar is the same instead of importing sugar from Brazil they subsidize the root beet sugar production.

Try taking off from Schiphol Amsterdam airport at early hours or in the evening. You'll see the iluminated green houses all over the place.

Try landing in Munich airport. You'll see farms the size of a soccer field. But they have tennis courts and BMW parked there.

Part of the 230 billion will be used to buy new BMW's and more tennis courts, perhaps.

OTEU: I don't think UK will get anything close to all
of that budget to restructure their meat production.

Deseased bananas only destroy the banana-workers
subcontracting for Chiquita. The first effect is
lowered sperm count, misformed children and
sterility, tumours, emotional distrubances and brain
damages. (what US has to do with bananas grown in
Latin America is something it takes some brain
damage to understand)

But unluckily the hormones reach the end-user in USA
in an only slightly diluted form, but still a
good system of returning them to their country of
origin.

Btw, I'm really happy for you, JohnG, that you now understand
why the french farmers protested against the english
meat-producers during Reagan-Thatcher unfortunate era.

The Reagan solution might of course had been to tell all
the sheep in UK "Just don't do it", and if you
do it, don't do it where there are cows.

Ilmarinen

P.S. I wonder if that famous swede maybe still was correct, he
who during the birth of english potato-libertarianism of
1800 wondered if it was due to some brain damage, lack of
capabilty to understanding complex matters, with a severe
need to see everything as in only in pairs of two
(duality, right-wrong,evil-good,etc, GPRS with
8 time slots is too difficult, just as WAP and GRPS)

Now one can add the mad-cow-and-foot-in-mouth-3G-
auction-potato-pest-famine attributes to it,
something Friedman and the CATO instute would be
proud of. (probably were, but are they still)
