"They need to cut the bad loans and let the phony asset values the banks carry on their books decrease the way they should. " This is similar to what has happened to internet-related stocks on the NAZ in the past year. The sell-off has ben a reflection of their poor fundamentals, first and foremost.

Wayne, you make it sound so easy, it is a wonder they have not done so...
But imagine you are a Japanese banker, and you call in some bad loans, and then 3 am your phone wrings, and a voice says: "do you know where your children are right now?"
See the movie Jubaku for a taste of this.
Of course it is only one terrifying aspect of why staightening things out is not so easy...
