High-tech Trouble Woe Compaq Show

HOUSTON (AP) - Compaq Computer Corp. is delaying its largest trade show for customers, citing the high-tech downturn.

The biennial Innovate Forum, which was to have been held here the week of May 23, is being postponed until next year at the earliest as part of the personal computer maker's cost cutting efforts, Compaq spokesman Arch Currid said Tuesday.

He said Compaq executives, including chairman and chief executive Michael Capellas, will make up for the missed time with customers by stepping up the number and frequency of account visits.

``He does a lot of that already,'' Currid told the Houston Chronicle, ``but there are regional vice presidents and others that will be out meeting with customers more often.''

Currid said the show has featured more than 4,000 customers and journalists to see new products rolled out and to ask questions of Compaq executives.

Compaq's announcement in March that it would miss earnings expectations for the first quarter of 2001 and cut up to 8,600 jobs means the expense of Innovate would best be saved for another time.

The show, which costs millions to produce, often features high-profile speakers such as Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates (news - web sites).
