ABout 25 miles as the crow flies. We had some minor structural damage and a ton of breakage. Everything fell out of every cupboard, every dresser was knocked over, everything fell out of our closets and our TV followed my husband out of the family room! In an earthquake, things don't fall down, they fly due to the force with which they are catapulted! Our friend's niece and her son were killed in the freeway collapse up in Oakland. One of my sons was playing water polo and the teams were washed out of the pool onto the cement deck. The goalie got caught in the net so the coach jumped in to free him. The water was going up and down a span of 6 to 8 feet! They were OK once they got out. We had friends who had their house collapse around them in Santa Cruz. They crawled out. EQ's that big are not much fun!
