I think it takes groups who are more on the edge, more provocative, to make the middle ground possible.

I remember that discussion. I think that works for a single issue. If you have a variety of issues, the number of people you piss off is additive. If your issue C pisses off a potential supporter of issue A, then issue A is the weaker for it. If you have different organizations for issue A and issue C, then you obviate the problem because the A supporters can support the A organization while they trash the C organization.
