Joan, the absolute amount of debt creation is indeed staggering, and a good deal of borrowers won't be able to repay, however, relative to the size of the economy it's not extreme. It was a mistake by many to confuse the part that debt played in building the asset bubble, but I also think it's a mistake to think that the problem is so large that a financial disaster looms.
