Lewis arrives, threatens to take Rock out
April 10 2001 at 09:40AM

By Gordon Prentice

World heavyweight boxing champion Briton Lennox Lewis and challenger Hasim Rahman exchange leather on April 22 at Carnival City but the pair will meet sooner than that.

The champion and his American challenger come face to face at a press conference for the first time at noon on Wednesday.

Lewis arrives in South Africa on Tuesday afternoon from New York, after spending the weekend in Las Vegas where he watched stablemate "Prince" Naseem Hamed lose for the first time as a professional. Lewis at the weekend threatened "to take The Rock (Rahman) out" but fight promoter Rodney Berman believes an upset could be on the cards at the casino resort.

"Lennox is leaving it very late to become acclimatised and coming in from the United States, he is also going to have to overcome jetlag. All these things are in favour of Rahman and a big upset could be on the cards. People thought it was a surprise when Hamed lost to Barrera, well they could be in for an even bigger surprise if Rahman upsets Lewis."

While Rahman has set up camp in Sandton, some 50km from Brakpan, Lewis has opted to stay and train at a luxury hotel about 15km away from the fight venue.

Lewis and his 20-man entourage have taken up a number of villas - the exact number remains a tightly-guarded secret - while hotel staff have converted a conference room into a makeshift gymnasium where the champion can train in seclusion away from prying media and members of the public.

"Hamed was repeatedly sent reeling like a spinning top or out-of-control limbo dancer. How he stayed off the canvas was a minor miracle."
