Juniper Networks first-quarter profits rise
SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 12 (Reuters) - Networking equipment maker Juniper Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:JNPR) on Thursday posted first-quarter results in line with Wall Street estimates as pro forma net income surged.

Juniper, which makes routers that speed traffic along communications networks, said its pro forma net income was $85.4 million, or 25 cents a share, compared with $10.5 million, or 3 cents a share, a year ago.

Excluding goodwill and other items, Juniper's profits rose to $58.6 million, or 17 cents a share, from $8.1 million, or 2 cents a share, a year ago.

The results were in line with Wall Street profit forecasts, which ranged from 21 to 25 cents a share, with a consensus forecast of 25 cents, according to research firm Thompson Financial/First Call.

First-quarter revenues increased 420 percent to $332.1 million.

Shares of Juniper, which has been rumored as a potential merger partner of networking infrastructure firm Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:RBAK), have fallen 62 percent over the past year, underperforming the Standard and Poor's 500 index by 53 percent. The stock was at $46.90 in pre-opening trade, up from a Wednesday close of $42.76.
