PT: And even today USB still seems to be "plug and pray" and my devices sometimes disappear/reappear or only like to be in one particular port. But, it is still a big step up from having to deal with adding additional ports and I like the hot-swappable.

At first I was thrilled about the hot plug feature of USB (well, I'm still thrilled about the feature, just not the implementation), but I've since run into many problems using it in Real Life (tm). Examples include (otherwise stable) programs crashing or other devices going AWOL when plugging in a device (even if the drivers for it are already installed).

Firewire, unfortunately, doesn't seem nearly as widely supported, but then none of the USB devices I have require any noticable bandwidth, so my need is fairly limited.
