Asia's 25 Best

URL:http://www.zdnetasia.com/biztech/specialreports/25movers2001/

As we looked around the Asia landscape for movers and shakers, we were aware that each country speaks a different language and operates under different conditions.
To choose Asia's 25 Movers and Shakers, ZDNetAsia surveyed the editors and staff of 9 countries in Asia and culled the original list of 60 names down to 25 truly outstanding leaders. We asked that they pick visionaries and survivors who have left an indelible mark in their home country and across international borders.

Hence, our inaugural list has some familiar faces and some unsung heroes that have rocked, kicked butt and 'moved mountains' in Asia.

Some, such as Fujio Mitarai and Morris Chang, may not grab the limelight as much as Li Ka-shing and Keiji Tachikawa, but they can shake the IT markets simply because they are first movers in their own marketplace.

For every Steve Chang and Shiv Nadar, there is a Ziggy Switkowski and Lee Hsien Yang. Technology is blind and it rewards entrepreneurs as well as boardroom managers as long as you outrun the competition and execute well.

It is not uncommon for Heads of States such as President Chen Sui-bian, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Minister Teo Chee Hean and Trade Secretary Mar Roxas II to occupy a preeminent place in the eyes of their countrymen and we believe they are exemplary in their roles to improve the knowledge and living standards of their constituents.

Many leaders earn a place through sheer determination - Richard Li and Stan Shih are but the best we have found.

Long after the glimmer on your screen has vamoosed, we believe the personalities of Asia's 25 Movers and Shakers will endure beyond 2001.

Cheers!
