Dear Scumbria: You change your interpretation of your words over time. What kind of example are you showing to your kids? You claimed that "sorry" and "apology" are the same. I showed you different. You claimed that Bush apologized. It did not come across in the speech that way. What is written down is devoid of the nuances and delivery. When you ask for your child to apologize to your wife about running through the house with muddy feet, you do not accept "IamsorryformuddyingthehouseMom" quickly said with a smile and unrepentant. You probably would if it the exact same words were used with the head down, an aggrieved expression, slowly with feeling. Thus, the written tone may not reflect reality without it being a lie. My Chinese co-worker (from Shanghai no less!) interpreted the letter as not being an apology in the sense initially demanded by the Chinese. He also thought they were wrong in asking for it as well. As a native speaker, I would trust his interpretation better than someone who is a non native speaker due to the different environment and assumptions used. Pete
