calling a thread the "left wing porch" or the "right wing extremist thread" presumably means something to the people who named them.

Very true, but the term might mean quite different things to the different inhabitants. Is the left wing porch a collection of left-wing posters, or is it a collection of individuals who identify themselves with the left and probably have compatible definitions of what "left" is.

Labels are convenient, and I have no real objection to them as long as the people who use them are aware that they are terms of convenience, not definable categories. We all use labels, but it's not a good idea to get religious about them.

It means you can hang with a group of people who think like the threadmeister, or are at the very least tailored by a particular threadmeister into the kind of group he or she wants. Whoever the threadmeister happens to be. That's all it means. Dictator for a day, or a week, or a few years- however long the thread lasts.
