The word "sorry" was used 3 times in the letter from the US Ambassador to China. One of these used the words "very sorry" You can find text of the letter on the internet. Standard English usage says this is the same as the word "apology". See Roget's Thesaurus So if you say "I'm so sorry" to a widow after her husband has died in a tragic accident you are apologizing for the accident? "Sorry" has different meanings, it can be an apology or just an expression of sorrow or regret. Maybe that makes it a good word to use in this situation. It can be interpreted in one way bu the US and in another by China. Tim
