In various times and at various places, thinking people have held many beliefs which have later been discovered to be false, or suspect, or based on limited or incorrect information. Much of what we now believe will probably be proved false eventually, as we learn more.

It is fascinating to examine thoughts that derived from different sets of premises, and to observe how thought has evolved as the box of premises containing it has grown larger and more permeable. There is nothing wrong with thinking within the confines of our available knowledge and reason. But basic curiosity makes us want to make the box a little bigger, and basic honesty makes us refrain from stepping back into a box we have already outgrown.
