What about Foster? If this analysis is correct and Foster shares these same characteristics, then it's performance, SMT or not, must be transcendentally horrible in a SMP environment. Between the long transfer bursts, hardware pre-fetch and the power management, we might have an explanation why the large cache Palominos were revived for the 760MP. The OEMs evaluated Fosters and found them lacking...

It sounds like the issue is more thermal than speed path related. Someone got it to 2.7 Ghz with liquid nitrogen. It seems that the circuitry will go as fast as you want it to until it begins to meltdown. However, this does not change the fact that the chip is a marketing sham.
