There is another side to the equation, as well. Yes, a desideratum of a liberal education is to foster critical intelligence. But each and every one of us is dependent upon competent authorities for much much of what we count as knowledge. We even know our own birthdates because someone else certifies them. We know the geography of the world because of atlases, and the provenance of words from dictionaries. Science hands us fact after fact we are not in a position to independently verify. Our primary activity is to discriminate among sources, rating reliability.
