e-bill,
Fun part is some people get screwed and they still think that had a nice time getting screwed. In this case both US and China lost. Few days later, after the crew is warmly welcomed (deservedly as they did "their" job superbly) the smoke will clear up and then people will realize the extent to which their countries got screwed. Already a retired military Colonel is assessing the damage

DIPLOMACY
Score this one a draw. The parsing of words about the apology is profoundly cynical but hardly unprecedented. It was exactly the kind of artful phrasing that we have so often seen as indispensable in managing our ambiguous relationship with the Chinese, such as the “one China policy” and the well-recognized, non-recognition of de facto Taiwanese independence. Both sides will make of this outcome what they will, although the Chinese lost no time in declaring that they won the day. This is the sort of influence-building exercise that Harvard’s Joseph Nye refers to as “soft power.” The Chinese can now credibly point out to their neighbors that they stood up to American “hegemony” — providing both a model of Asian assertiveness and a not-so-very-subtle suggestion that the Chinese are now the major force in the region to be reckoned with.

INTELLIGENCE
A huge win for China. There is no other way to think of this incident as anything other than an intelligence windfall for China and a major disaster for the United States.
