Some would say another, perhaps more vigorous, axis runs from US West Coast to Asia. In global sense, it is unlucky and a bit arrogant to say "the" axis. Best to say, "an" axis, otherwise folks like Sony, Intel, Q, NEC, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Microsoft, etc., might get their feelings hurt.
