You're off your rocker if you think the S+L debacle was money well-"invested". Stolen my thieves. And who ever said I want a friggin' welfare state? What? Just because I value the environment I am a socialist wanting everyone on the dole? You have a cliched view. I am a staunch fiscal conservative. I think people should work, immigration should be tougher, taxes should be paid and deficits should be paid off before giving away government revenues to fat cats who don't need it. I also know that throwing the poor into emergency rooms when they get sick is a huge waste of money. Clinton worked well with Republicans to minimize welfare roles and make people work for their dole. Even single mothers must now be employed to receive welfare. Fine. Life is no picnic and should have used birth control. Which also means sex education in schools as opposed to the Relgious Right (er, wrong) opinion. They are in real denial.
