Well there you go! "I have seen it referred to in enough web articles to believe it." That settles it! After all what more evidence can you expect, than that? Thank you Solon.

Relax Greg! I am only talking about the existence of a well referenced documentation. If it doesn't exist I won't defend it and say..."OH...BUT IT DOES! LOL!!

Let's hold Buddhist scriptures to the same standard that is demanded for the Bible and then let's see how they fare

I haven't made any attempt to push the philosophy or tradition of Buddhism. I have correctly pointed out in numerous places that the Christian dogma derives from Buddhist, Hindu, Babylonian, Zoroastrian and other myths and traditions. These facts are as obvious to you as they are to everyone else. It is not my responsibility to cuddle your faith for you.

But you Solon, you! Where are all the stories about Buddha in the garden with the naked boys? Where are all your mocking, and blasphemous accusations about Buddha?

If I knew of any I would post them--and so would you. Characterizing statements as mocking or blasphemous is extraneous to the particulars of this discussion. If your emoting is useful for you, then fine--it certainly does no harm to me.

Could it be that you have a special place reserved, (in that cavernous abyss you call a heart), for the God of the Bible? Are your teeth hurting again?

No and NO.

Solon, you are a hate monger

NO. You are reacting to my quoting of biblical scriptures and biblical articles. I wish for peace on earth and amongst all people. I believe the bible promotes hatred and racism and war. I believe there are wonderful people that have given us guidelines to live by which do not entail guns and bombs and having the market cornered on custom, culture, and meaning. It is true that I hate the bible. I think it is an ugly book to follow when there are so many authors who exalt the spirit of compassion, and who promote mutual blessings rather than eternal torture.

Your contempt for Christians, is manifest in every post that deals with the subject, and is exceeded only by your hatred for God Himself

I hate the Christian concept of God. It divides people; It condemns people without any rational basis; It is ugly. I cannot imagine why it would appeal to anyone other than those who would do absolutely anything to attain the selfish goal of a future eternity regardless of how selfish and ignorant the means. But as you so gleefully say--keep your eyes on Jerusalem--arm those kids for the glory of God.

I don't hate Christians. I hate the beliefs that many religions proselytize.

If you attempts were not so flaccid and feeble, they might be humorous.

My responses on SGBR as well as here, are quotes from the bible, and articles by scholars and others analysing some of the ancient documents that are still available to us. Do you really find biblical quotes feeble?

As it is, all they do is demonstrate to all that you are just a pathetic little man who is afraid of his own mortality.

I am not a little man in any category. Some people think I'm pathetic. As far as my mortality, if I was afraid I would embrace anything that would offer me hope. For instance, I would willingly gloat over eternal torture for others, and I would have no problem in praising acts of cruelty. I don't do either of those things. I condemn the bible that exalts them, and for this you find fault in me.

You may perhaps have encountered a rather familiar quote about protesting too much...

You have the temerity to call Matthew a liar?

Matthew was a liar. How else do you explain his lies??

When did this event happen?

It didn't. It's a myth that got passed around. A power myth, a magic-man myth. They went around by the thousands in that era (they still do in many primitive cultures, and some less primitive ones).

When was this story written down?

Probably hundreds of years after it started being passed around orally.

By whom was it written?

We'll never know.

How much time elapsed between the supposed event and the oldest, extant copy of the manuscript?

There was no supposed event. It was a myth, a myth that crept into the scriptures of two religions that are still alive and probably many long dead ones as well.

Does it exhibit the characteristics of a historical narrative, or does it read like a mythological tale?

Of course it reads like a mythological tale. How could any story of a person taking a stroll on the surface of the sea sound like anything else?

Does the story contain references to historical Persons, or places, or events, that can verified to have existed or taken place?

Only if the myth accumulated them along the way.

Are there any independent, non-Buddhist sources that might corroborate this story?

Nobody needs to corroborate it, because nobody's claiming that it actually happened. We don't believe that Buddha ever did the cha-cha on the deep blue sea, and we don't believe that Jesus ever did either. The only point was that this particular myth had been around for quite a while when Jesus arrived on the scene.
