Fyo, Re: "What did you do to achieve this drop in noise?"

I changed the 38cfm (nominal) fan in the PSU to a 26cfm (nom) model. The PSU is not the best choice for providing overall case air flow and has poor intake/discharge conditions (ie. limited areas, particularly at the periphery of the exhaust where the velocities are the highest). Of course, the PSU needs to have enough airflow to keep itself cool... but I suspect the stock fan in the Sparkle 250W model was designed to be "safe" for a case with no auxiliary fans. My Sparkle 300W model has a much lower CFM rated fan AND much better intake/discharge. Note, both Sparkle models were noted as "noise killer" but the 250W model might be better described as "killer noise." I haven't tried an Enermax Whisper model I have yet and also plan to order an Antec with Smartfan (thermally controlled). Since my systems are low power users other than the OC processor there isn't a need for a lot of system airflow.

Of course, my case temps went up 2C. I wrote an article on this for fun: mikhailtech.com and have gotten some helpful feedback from readers who are also interested in quieter systems.

Next mod will try to improve case intake (punch grill) and PSU discharge (punch grill) to further reduce noise and add to air flow. May also adjust case fans. However, I will be awaiting a better sound meter as my current model only goes down to 50dB and I have already reached 51dB.

I may try some external noise insulation near the back and also possible some dampening on the inside of the panels. Current (generic) case is not real friendly for further case fans beyond a 60mm in the rear.
