He'll play to a portion of the left in 2004 because he's a tear-it-all-down-and-get-a-people's-republic-that-we-can-trust kind of guy. And as you just demonstrated, you'll look for any excuse to blame a fantasy conspiracy rather than admit that a liberal government blew it. The Dems face a typical problem: they've already moved as far left as they can afford to. So any attempt to grab votes from the Nader crowd costs them multiples on their own right flank ("New Democrat" and all that rubbish). The Republicans have faced a similar problem (in fact, it's characteristic of our 2-party system) with Libertarian votes. They may get some room there in 2004 if they can back off on that great CONSERVATIVE FOLLY, the ill-fated "War on Drugs", as well as returning to true tax reform, since it appeals to Libs because the IRS necessarily loses power in a reformed tax system with a single rate. But the Rep/Lib thing is an old problem that the GOP has so far shown little aptitude for solving. What would actually benefit either party-and what could determine the next majority-would be devoting the minor resources required to take on these mini-groups head on. The simple FACT is that neither Harry Browne nor Crazy Ralph is qualified in any respect to execute the office of President. The appropriate battery of negative ads would serve the 2 purposes of running some people who are too stupid to be voting in the first place out of the process, and returning those with a slim hope of responsible citizenship back to the mainstream. I think the Republicans will figure this out first for 2004, and reap the benefits. What, after all, does it gain the Dems to pick up that extra 1.5% in New York or Mass? The Republicans were hurt in close states by the Libs, and seem now to recognize the need to deal with their own problem on the margin. Stepping on the enviro-whacko left, none of whom voted for him anyway, is a gimme for GWB...
