CalPERS "loses" $9 billion in market decline

The California Public Employees Retirement System [CalPERS] had a "paper loss" of $9 billion in February, a spokesman confirmed today. The bulk of the loss, $5.4 billion, is attributable to declining stock prices.

"We have gains and losses on a daily basis," the spokesman said. "We are not alarmed but are alert."

He said the fund, which provides retirement benefits for about 1.2 million former public employees, is "well-diversified" and has more than enough money to meet its obligations, despite the decline in its equity holdings. "We have a healthy fund," he stressed.
