[LatelineNews: 2001-2-26] SINGAPORE - "Spiderman" has his eye on Singapore again but this time French daredevil Alain Robert wants to stay on the right side of the law when he tries to climb Asia's tallest hotel.

Robert, who has eluded police to scale some of the world's loftiest skyscrapers, clambered up 21 storeys of the city state's 280-metre (910-foot) Overseas Union Bank tower in November before being nabbed by waiting officers short of the top.

He was let off with a warning but, with the 226-metre Westin Stamford Hotel now beckoning, the bare-handed climber says he will do everything by the book by applying for a permit.

"I don't want to be in any more trouble with the Singapore government," Monday's Straits Times newspaper quoted him as saying. "This time everything must be legal."

The hotel said it had not heard from Robert but did not rule out allowing him to try for the top.

"On the condition that he can prove to us that he has papers from the authorities, we will of course assess his request," a hotel spokeswoman told Reuters.

Robert has illegally scaled more than 30 buildings, including the Empire State Building in New York, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the 110-storey Sears Tower in Chicago.

"I free-climb buildings firstly because they exist but also because they are the urban mountains," he said in an interview with Reuters Video News at the time of his last Singapore climb.
