I did uninstall WinZip and everything associated with it, but still the defrag can't commence unless i'm in safe mode, so it wasn't WinZip.

I've printed out and read the links you gave. They don't mention the specific problem, but they mention trying to defrag and having to start over and over again, which is close. I am afraid to go into the registry. Too many dire warnings. And I can't believe my screensavers, which have been working fine for a long time, are the problem.

Since I installed Windows ME, I use both the Netscape and IE browser windows, sometimes at the same time. I would hate to give up either of them. But I wonder if, in spite of my having been assured that that's okay to do, using both is a bad thing. Of course neither browser window is open when I try to defrag.

I've run disk cleanup.

I think that for now I'm going to be defragging in safe mode....
