around 384MB for a design that 60% fills a V1000E

that's my experience too. I have a duron box in my office but I have never tried a large design on it. Mostly my clients' machines were used.

"Hi revision1; Are you routing Virtex stuff? Ali Chen swore to me that Pentiums were more efficient than Athlons on them."

The Altera EP20K1000 and EP20K500 are being used. Synplicity is used for synthesis and Quartus is used for place and route. Some of the options on the core being used will max out these devices and in many cases the Altera devices are 90 to 95 percent utilized. The memory requirements were empirically determined by increasing memory until the total job ran out of memory, i.e. no disk accesses.

I have recently moved on from that company so I will not have an opportunity to test a P4 in this type of application.
