Dan3:

No doubt, accounting games can be played, both with plant/depreciation and investment gains...INTC was able to camouflage its declining business trends by propping up Y2000 earnings to the tune of close to $3 billion in earniings flowing directly from the sale of its investments, such as Micron...This "reserve fund" is now dry and in fact may be a drag on Y2001 earnings as INTC is obligated by accounting rules to report investments at the lower of cost or market share...Given the erosion in Nasdaq values, INTC may be at the threshold in its investment activities where fairly significant write downs are required in accordance with generally accepted accounting rules in stark contrast to those $3 billion in capital gains included in earnings last year!!!

I have no feel for how much play is left in INTC's plant/depreciation valuations, but no matter how great, I just that a significant decline in sequential revenues and/or year/year revenues cannot be swept under the carpet by any accounting wizardry...Significantly declining revenues spell trouble with a capital "T"...A sequential decline by 10%, is huge and signals upcoming storm clouds usually...A sequential decline by 25%, as some are predicting, is likely equivalent to a second tornado warning as, the 25% decline would signal that the first tornado has already passed through!!!

<font color=brown>Presario 1800-XL1 models using Intel SpeedStep technology in Windows 2000 will not experience a performance increase after coming out of hibernation mode."

Compaq on 2/15/2001 had this insight:
"If a Presario 1800-XL184,185 or 186 Notebook computer using SpeedStep version 1.0.0.4 compatible technology in Windows 2000 enters hibernation mode while the battery is low, the SpeedStep technology will not be able to change system performance.
An error message will appear stating: 'The system was unable to change performance. To change performance, you must shutdown and restart your computer' every time you plug in or unplug AC.To prevent this error from coming up repeatedly, reboot the computer either while the computer is running or simply turn off the system and turn it back on."
