"We also have the talent to safely build nuclear power plants."

Yes, we have had the technology to build safe nuclear power plants for years. They are called Thorium breeder reactors. Unlike with Uranium breeder reactors, which produce the highly toxic Plutonium, Thorium breeder reactors produce U233.

Historically, Uranium breeder reactors won because the U.S. military needed Plutonium to build nuclear weapons. But even though the initial incentive for going with Uranium breeder reactors no longer exists, the change over to Thorium breeder reactors will not take place for the same reason that the U.S. automobile industry refused to switch to the cleaner burning stratified charge engine. The infrastructure is geared towards production of Uranium breeder reactors.

Michael re:"Or, we could simply open up the VAST oil reserves in Alaska "

Sorry, I'm a little late in responding but what are the estimated reserves of US oil? What are the world reserves? I've always been under the impression that the reserves would run out in about 2050 as evidenced by the extreme's we are going through to find new deposits... Accordingly, I've always thought it was a good idea to use foreign oil and save our own as long as possible.
