sun-tzu,

Re:- the depression,

Oh Kay. So Europe didn't suffer from a depression? Or, it was all exported from the USA?

Not disagreeing with any of your facts, just that the story may be wider in origin.

The UK coal mines and industry were clapped out by the 20's.

pearly.

According to Hoover, it wasn't him to pursued the restrictive policies, it was the Secretary of the Treasury - but that's BS of course, "the buck stops" on the President's desk. One of Hoover's platforms was "Farm Relief." Farmers were hurting all through the 1920's, long before the Crash. Congress passed two farm relief bills but Coolidge vetoed them. When Hoover was elected he called a special session of Congress to pass a farm relief bill. Republicans back then were really big on tariffs. The Fordney-McCumber tariff of 1922 was the worst ever - until Smoot-Hawley - passed under Harding, a Republican. But it "protected" farmers - big tariffs on sugar and pork. It was the retaliation that hurt farmers - no one thought about that.

No wonder the little guys hate Republicans.-ng-

(I'm Republican but believe in free trade.)
