IF a management team has a leader that is understands that fairness is more important than the comfort level of peers then there are ways to be pretty darn fair.

however, most (and i mean MOST!) management teams either don't know or don't care. i've seen it too many times.

i had a report that loved to shoot the breeze and shmooze as time allowed (not on work time). he was an OK worker - nothing special, nothing bad. i thought he was a nice guy. he got an avg review and was *shocked*. previous experience had taught him how to "get ahead" and i was *breaking the rules*. a guy that spoke to me maybe 5 times in 6 months got one of the best reviews i've every given b/c he was at least twice as productive as his his peer avg with twice the quality.

i left that shift and this guy was rifed (reduction in force) and folks with half his talent were retained. you see, they *talked* a good game while this guy just worked. i took an interest in finding out who was successful b/c i *respect* the efforts of people and want to reward them. most supervisors / managers don't want to be inconvenienced.

self promotion and perceived self interest are elevated above fairness time and time again. so much so that i'm getting awful tired of it. it is *really* demotivating - even to me and i'm a very motivated guy.
