I have quit smoking for about 4 years now. It was my nth attempt.

Good for you.

I'm at about day 42 on my (n+1)th attempt.

I still get an urge from time to time for some strange reason, but I know that if I ever have even one cigarette, I will be back at it like I never quit within just a few days.

Yep. Same for me. I've gone as long as a year before the big (and rapid) slide back to oblivion.

The failure rate is supposedly still at 50% at the 5 year mark.

I find that somewhat surprising. Mind you, a buddy of mine made it about seven years. He's now up to about five a day again.

I recommend "cold turkey". I had a very dificult time but other than withdrawal symtoms, there were no other side effects.

So do I. The first day is hell, but if I make that, I can go long distance. Yet to be determined if I can go the distance.

Regards,

WillP

teevee,

'I still get an urge from time to time for some strange reason,.'

Yep, I still get the 'urge' occasionally also, BUT long gone are the chest ripping cravings ... you know the ones that strip you of all pride like when they send you scurrying for the butts in the ash tray when you've run out etc etc... LOL.
The sensation used to make think of that scene from the original Aliens movie where the little alien rips out of the guys chest.

' but I know that if I ever have even one cigarette, I will be back at it like I never quit within just a few days'

Turned down some Cubans (the cigars LOL) when my folks came back from vacation for just that reason. It's not the starting again that scares me as much as trying to quit again. :0)

kidl,

'Has anyone here tried Zyban?'
I have a customer that's been on it 7 weeks (and his buddy). He says it's going well for him but his buddy is having a bit of a problem as he bends his arm quite a bit, so his habits are less conducive to success. I didn't think of this earlier but when I finally managed to quit I still drank lots of coffee but I did cut out all beer excursions etc for maybe 6 months.

regards
Kastel
