i didn't say that leaving norton system doctor open would preclude you from running the windows defrag tool.

your statement was....

"Speed Disk is Norton's defragmenter and doesn't normally run in the background. The Disk Defragmenter is the Windows defragger. Why would anyone run both at the same time?"

and i said that they couldn't and wouldn't.

leaving system doctor open is not the same as running speed disk and windows defragger at the same time.

am i missing something, gottfried?

I read somewhere along the "E" trail that sometimes task scheduler can initiate both programs at the same time and this will result in the "disk in use" message.
