mishedlo: Without risk, there is no gain. I see the risk as very, very minimal for AAPL. Jobs happens to be on Gap's board, and he learned a few things while being there. Well, actually Jobs has *always* been a marketing genius. You are underestimating him... these are rumored to be stylish stores w/ a flare similar to their iMacs. It will sell their products just as iMac's style saved them from doom. These stores are, in fact, the greatest hope AAPL ever had. AAPL has no really good direct sales channel except their Web site. CompUSA sales reps know nothing about AAPL products and often are behind the curve when stocking items. This is why AAPL recently announced this move: applelinks.com

BTW, I highly, highly doubt AAPL will merely be selling computers in those stores. These will be appliance stores of the future IMO... a Jetson's smorgsbord. I-appliances galore. ORCL's Ellison is seldom wrong.

Steve Jobs & Co. realized that a slow & agonizing death was not appealing. In order to expedite the process, AAPL has decided to open up stores. It'll be a quick way to dispose of cash that will otherwise take years to draw down. Brilliant move. Consider that it is a great time to be an Apple only store, "Buzzle, a conglomeration of the largest Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) resellers in Australia, has been placed in receivership amid a mountain of debt....The problems at Buzzle follow the recent closure of long-time San Francisco Bay Area Mac chain ComputerWare. Earlier this year, New England Mac seller Computer Town closed all but two locations when it changed ownership. "

Zen, IMHO opening AAPL stores is the single STUPIDST thing they can do.

Didn't Gateway just go through that maze?

OK, I'll elaborate. A million years ago, everyone had black, rotary-dial telephones. Then, in the "new beginning" (meaning after the break-up of AT&T), telephones were manufactured in different colors.
Name one manufacturer of household telephones that prospered because they could produce them in a color other than black.

I'm still waiting.
