Justice must be satisfied. On some level, one must at least acknowledge one's personal fault. Even supposing the doctrine of Vicarious Atonement, it seems to me that one has to accept forgiveness, and one's personal culpability, in order to accept the gift. Why require Faith unless one requires that the gift be accepted? Anyway, to me, it is not all juridical. Penance not only guarantees the sincerity of one's contrition, but is necessary to change one's character. Purgatory is not primarily a matter of paying a bill, it is a matter of purification......
