First & foremost:

Gold IS Money.

Secondly; I think more gold gets consumed than "fiat paper" and gold-money is certainly more expensive to produce than "fiat-paper money" ~ and it's not merely a matter of cranking up the presses to "make more"...

PS: The US dollar has lost 80% of it's purchasing power in just the last 20 years.
