The fourth week of March (March 19-25, 2001) was the beginning of the school vacation, which also included a holiday, Vernal Equinox Day, on March 20. Desktop PCs, however, went down 16.5 percent from the previous year's records and dragged down total PC sales, which did not reach the figures of last spring sales' peak, ending without much success. GfK Japan is an information service company that deals with POS data collected from 3,200 volume retailers of household electric appliances. The PC sales in the fourth week of March increased both in units, by 16.8 percent in units, and in value by 17.2 percent from the previous week. Compared with the same period last year (March 20-26, 2000), sales decreased both by 2.6 percent in units, and by 6.1 percent in value. The average PC price increased by 569 yen to 192,385 yen from the previous week's 191,816 yen.
