Thanks, I'm glad you found it interesting. Yes, the earnings were totaled using the market cap weightings of the NASDAQ composite. I had not done the calculation for the NASDAQ 100 because the NDX is such an oddly weighted index (weights depend on trading volume as well as market cap). However, just as a matter of interest I did so for data as of yesterday. The result is similar: the total weighted average earnings are negative. If you calculate the weighted average P/E for the 70 profitable companies, however, it comes out to about 34.
