"There is quite a bit of difference between religious schools today, and the ones you highlight from hundreds of years ago. Your "recent checkered past" is not recent at all."

True enough, but will this difference remain once religion gets an adequate toehold. Religious oppression cycles are generally centuries long.

Back when the amendments to the Constitution were being written, Thomas Jefferson was concerned about the potential for a repeat of religious attrocities, such as the Salem witch trials, in which one of my ancestors was murdered.

The Salem witch trials started off with a few children accusing adults at which they were upset of witchcraft. Medical practitioners picked up on this as a means of eliminating the herbalist that were competing with them, and later the magistrates joined in as they discovered it was an easy way to gain access to prime real estate that they or their friends were interested in.

Several decades ago, the religious zealots entered into collusion with the drug companies to eliminate herbal treatments, such as cannibis. We have now reached the point were the "magistrates" have stepped in to claim their booty, in the form of asset forfeiture. This, together with the creationism movement convinces me we are on the verge of moving into another dark age where The Serpent once again reigns triumphant.
