So the short answer to my question is NO - you do not have any data on the Pentium 4 processor.

The data that you DO have has incorrectly colored your perceptions of this feature. On all the products you mentioned, there is a much smaller difference between high power apps and low power apps than there is on Pentium 4.

The 72C is a misunderstanding on your part. The thermal management kicks in at a die temp around 90C.

The 50C closet thing is really silly. None of the products you mentioned are spec'd to operate in a 50C external ambient, and most of them will give you the blue screen of death if you try it. Most people would prefer a slowdown to a crash.

Your comments on the specs are totally unwarranted - Intel published both TDP and max power from the very beginning.

The real beef is that the thermal management gives the Pentium 4 processor an edge, and that seems a little like cheating to die-hard AMD fans.

P.S. I'm an Intel employee, but I never speak for my employer.

Just for laughs, check out what a hoot the extreme overclockers think this is (scroll down to Sat. 4-14). It's a little too irreverent for this forum.

pete, AMD used to have their "BURN" program on their website. I think it was from the 233 MHz K6 era. I wonder if anyone ever disassembled it to see what it did, or whether its still hiding there.
