Well, i'd have sworn it wasn't there when i looked for it at 3:11 am, but at 9:19 am, there it is!

So I can remove the one from my desktop.

Thank you!

Hey, now I know why ms dos prompt wasn't there when I went to it via start... programs... accessories last night.

Because i didn't hold my cursor there long enough for the menu to pop up. Yes, those little downward pointing arrows should have told me to go there, but, at least at 3 am, didn't. Today both the frequently used System Tools and ms dos prompt show up immediately.

But, bosquedog, i'm sorry to report that using the dos prompt and typing in either the command offered in the link or your shorter version of it after DOS's "C:/WINDOWS>" doesn't accomplish the unlock.

So for now I'm back to Safe Mode and waiting through the restarts for defragging.

I haven't yet gone through tc's "Drive contents have changed, restarting" advice that I saved on my desktop yesterday, but the restarting is not the same problem as the being locked by a disk utility problem. Though they do seem related....
