Sewon to supply handsets to LGT

Sewon Telecom said yesterday that it will supply 400,000 new handsets to LG
Telecom (LGT) for CDMA (code division multiple access) 2000-1x (or also called
IS-95C) services.

Worth 128 billion won ($98.4 million), the handsets will be supplied under an ODM
(original design manufacturing) contract, officials said.

The handsets are named 'CPD510' and 'CPD520,' and were developed by Sewon
Telecom with its own technology.

Officials explained that these dual-folder-type handsets are enabled for CID (Caller
I.D.) services and are equipped with an eight-line LCD (liquefied crystal display) and
seven-color LED (light emitting diode) antennas. They are also able to play tunes
incorporating 16 notes.

These handsets will be available on the market from next month through LGT.

"Starting with the marketing of these new models, we are planning to step up efforts to
occupy the next-generation handset market," said an official of Sewon Telecom.

The handset manufacturer sold a total of 583,000 handsets in the first three months of
this year, including 403,000 in the domestic market and 180,000 to China and other
countries.

Yes, the difference is that larger crystals are now being grown (hopefully more economically).

Both 4H and 6H are now available in 2" and 3" wafers. It seems that 4H is preferred for high-power radio
frequency devices, although I believe that it is possible to make them using 6H as well.

Now I am really confused! Cree had been touting their move to 3" for some time, until the January conference call when they suddenly backpeddled and indicated they would decrease their costs going forward with more efficient use of 2" wafers. I took that to mean they were having problems in their transition to 3".

As I recall, almost nothing was said about 3" in last week's conference call. If they have now overcome the 3" production problems, I would have thought this would have been central to that call.

Perhaps I just missed the whole point of what Hunter was saying.

At any rate, it is great to see they are moving forward with 3". I am making the presumption that this will lead to more economical LED and RF components that can only be good for Cree.
