David L., How long till they do support fabric?
What do you think of these blades? To those not in the biz it sounds like a winner. Standardized modules that fit the slots. If you want iSCSI then get the iSCSI, if FC fits the bill get some of those, if you want to do some clustering and VI then buy some Iband modules? Nothing to argue about. Kind of like a SAN resaurant where you can get anything you want.

What would you think of a mix and match director?

Do you think that Q can make the grade? I see they were the sponsor of the last DAFS meeting in April.

QLogic Launches SANblade Initiative
SANblade Board-Level Products Are First Standard Adapter Platform for SAN Connectivity
ALISO VIEJO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 17, 2001--QLogic Corp. (Nasdaq:QLGC - news), the only end-to-end storage area network (SAN) infrastructure provider, today launched SANblade(TM), the first board-level platform to allow OEMs and IT professionals to standardize and simplify their SAN connectivity solutions for server and storage systems.

Standardizing and Simplifying SANs

Currently when implementing SANs, customers must sort between multiple hardware components and management software offerings, based on numerous technologies from multiple vendors. It is often very complex and expensive for OEMs and IT departments to undergo all the steps of SAN design, acquisition, deployment and operation. OEMs and storage network administrators rely on the ability to standardize on proven technology that works and scales with their existing infrastructures.

QLogic SANblade -- Common Interface for Multiple Technologies

The QLogic SANblade is designed to address IT and OEM issues, supporting a broad range of topologies and customers' application-specific requirements with a common hardware interface platform, software management suite, driver interface and sales channel. The SANblade family currently consists of board-level solutions based on Fibre Channel and in the future will include InfiniBand and iSCSI products. SANblade was created to simplify SAN design, acquisition and deployment with all QLogic SANblade products engineered around a standard, common driver interface (CDI) so developers can migrate between topologies with minimal investment and bring new-technology products to market quickly.

The term ``server blade'' or ``computing blade'' refers to a board-level solution that is designed for computing density along with a universal modular architecture that ensures both flexibility and scalability. Blades are a great asset to the data center, saving valuable space and power consumption.

``IDC believes there is an early market developing for blade technology in the server space,'' said John Humphreys, research analyst, IDC. ``Drivers for server blade adoption in the general market include additional space savings and attention to power consumption and dynamic workload management - which are all becoming increasingly critical to successful Internet-centric business plans. While these products will be introduced this year, IDC believes server blades and related technology will find an explosive market opportunity over the course of our five year forecast period.''

``With so many I/O technologies on the horizon, customers are concerned about sorting through the confusion as they seek to match the right SAN infrastructure solutions to their customers' application requirements,'' said Frank Berry, vice president of product marketing, QLogic Computer Systems Group. ``QLogic is simplifying SAN solutions by providing commonality among the major I/O infrastructures, making it easier to buy, sell and support one family of board-level products for every topology and application, including backup, clustering, VI or storage virtualization.''

QLogic, The Only End-to-End SAN Infrastructure Provider

The SANblade family, currently comprised of QLogic's market-leading Fibre Channel host bus adapter line which includes the QLA2100, QLA2200 and QLA2300 Series PCI products, and the QLA2202FS Sbus solution, rounds out the industry's only end-to-end SAN infrastructure. This includes the company's cost-effective SANbox(TM) edge switches for work groups, and high-port-count, high-availability SANbox director class switches for enterprise-class data centers, as well as target controller chips for disk and tape drives.

2 Gigabit End-to-End

Only QLogic offers a complete suite of 2 Gigabit-per-second building blocks, pre-tested for interoperability and administered by a complementary SAN management software platform. This broad range of high-performance 2 Gigabit products, all available from a single vendor, allows OEMs, VARs storage service providers (SSPs) and end-users to build cost-effective, plug-and-play SANs that are centrally managed and highly available.
