Fez, you have an interesting question, yet I think the answer partly has to do with what Frank termed "Marketexture". While I cannot attempt to elucidate the technical implications with any certainty, I *can* say the key Marketing Term here (in today's newsie) is "on a global scale"...I think. Perhaps previously we have seen reports of this provisioning on certain routes, and now it is being implemented on the entire network...?

Speaking of technical issues, has anyone come across the assertions that long-haul without amplification can be injurious to the fiber itself? Too much power degrades the fiber over time? I have seen a 'five year life expectancy' discussed, but I am curious about this.....

Thanks for any input.
