The fundamental data rate of human speech has not changed and so it is only non-voice data that will impact processor speeds. If cell phones get color graphic displays for web browsing then the chip speed wars will soon follow.

No, it is just that the INTEL guys have had this mindset for so long that a major lobotomy at this point is the only way they can stop using MIPS to sell silicon. TI has had a high MIPS DSP for wireless for a LOOOOOOOONG time and it still does not get mention very much. As you say, it is voice quality, low power, and performance (in the call procssing way) that counts.
