Vodafone UK Makes 3g Network Voice Call

4/17/2001

The mobile network operator Vodafone UK reports that it has successfully conducted what it claims to be Britain's first live voice call over a 3G network.

The call was made together with Ericsson, Vodafone's principal 3G infrastructure supplier, from a prototype 3G mobile over the operator's initial 3G network of 30 radio base stations in the Thames Valley.

Vodafone, which launched its GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network at the beginning of April, has been rolling out its 3G network since 4Q'2000 and plans to launch commercial 3G services in 2H'2002. By 2007 the company hopes to be able to exceed its licence obligation of covering 80% of the UK population
